Human Rights Expert Michel Forst to Meet Haitian Community in Miami

MIAMI, USA(defend.ht) - UN Special expert on the situation of human rights in Haiti, Michel Forst, in a short stopover in Miami, will meet with the Haitian community during a press briefing on Friday, February 10, at 10AM, at Little Haiti Cultural Center (212 NE 59th Ter, Miami FL).

Michel Forst is just returning from his latest trip to Haiti (January 31 to February 8, 2012) and will be in Miami for a short stopover. The press briefing will focus on his preliminary findings of this trip, including the human rights issues in the context of the humanitarian crisis, the implementation of a human rights-based approach to reconstruction, preventing impunity for serious human rights violations and the pursuit of reforms in the area of rule of law.

At Little Haiti Cultural Center, the human rights expert will meet Haitian press in South Florida and some community leaders such as Marleine Bastien from the human rights organization FANM (Haitian women in Miami).

During his trip the Independent Expert has visited Port-au-Prince and Gonaives and has met with Haitian government officials, Members of Parliament, the national human rights institution, the diplomatic corps, representatives of MINUSTAH (United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti) and the UN System in Haiti, as well as members of the diplomatic corps and civil society.

The UN Secretary General appointed Mr. Michel Forst as Independent Expert on the situation of human rights in Haiti in June2008. Mr. Forst is General Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission of France and author of different publications on human rights, extreme poverty and the United Nations.
