PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (defend.ht) - Daniel Supplice, Minister of Haitians Living Abroad (MHAVE), confirmed on Wednesday the official launch of the week of the diaspora scheduled from 16 to 22 April 2012. This week of activities is to mark the international day of the diaspora, celebrated April 20 of each year for some time, following a government decree previously made March 16, 2011.
A series of cultural, sports and intellectual events including conferences-debates are planned this week dedicated specially to the Haitian diaspora, estimated according to the Minister of Haitians Living Abroad (MHAVE) to some 2 million around the world. These activities will take place on the theme: "Haiti needs its diaspora."
According to the Minister Supplice, it is to showcase our compatriots overseas evolving in America, Europe, Africa and Asia.
Interventions, informed the minister, will be on issues of migration, the dimension of the diaspora, the geography of the diaspora, but also of the contribution and the importance of the diaspora. Important personalities of the diaspora will also come to share their experiences.
"We need experienced, experiences, expertise of Haitians living abroad," he stressed, announcing the crossing of the presence of the Haitian Hollywood actor, Jimmy Jean-Louis that will benefit to the presentation of his new film to the Haitian public this week.
In the same logic of the week, groups of Haitians abroad will also organize activities, informed the Minister Daniel Supplice announcing the formation of a committee whose mission will be to coordinate all the activities planned within the framework of the program.
While promising to support the Haitian Diaspora politically, the Minister of Haitians Living Abroad emphasized the contribution to the local economy, remittances of our overseas compatriots, evaluated annually in several billion U.S. dollars.
